CTSI Logistics US transported the US Department of Defense’s 17 foot tall radome to the US Naval Base Imperial Beach last April 2007 using a specialized trailer. US Station Director for Global Business Development Obie Obien said that while the delivery was a logistical challenge, they were up to the task.
The radome – a combination of a radar and dome – is a structural, weatherproof enclosure used to protect an antenna. What distinguishes a radome structure from other structures is that the material used in building the radome allows an electromagnetic signal between the antenna inside the radome and outside equipment.
The radome’s delivery presented to be big logistical challenge to the US Station since it had to be transported from Matson Long Beach to the US Naval Base Imperial Beach, which is two miles north of the Californian Mexican border. But the team members at the LAX Supply Chain Center were up to the task. “Detailed follow-up was needed with all concerned from the carrier at Matson, the pier details with the Longshoremen, making certain the riggers and the specialized trucking company arrived in a timely fashion and then the multiple daily communications with several people providing updated status and details. This is where relationships and teamwork made this happen successfully,” said Obien.
The US Station used a specialized trailer since the radome was extremely fragile. “It was also top heavy as well and we needed to be careful it wouldn’t tip over in transit during its 135 mile trip south to San Diego,” added Obien who personally followed the caravan to the naval base. “Personalized service was key to really making this happen.”
Obien said that the radome arrived at the naval base on time and the US military was able to unload the truck with no problems.
The operation was a joint project of CTSI Logistics (Guam and US) and the L-3 Communications/Titan Group who works with the US Department of Defense. The Guam Station oversees sales efforts on Guam, Saipan and Micronesia. “We have handled much larger, more critical and more expensive logistics for them, we have supported them with manpower, export packing, trucking, heavy lift, air freight, documentation, customs clearance, door and base deliveries to remote and difficult access areas in support of the X-1 Mission for the Navy Seal Team based on Guam.” says Bob Terry, Guam Station Sales and Marketing Consultant. |
